Major £16m restoration for HMS Victory
Nelson’s HMS Victory. the 243 year old historic ship is to undergo major restoration thanks to the MOD who are paying £16m towards the restoration of the world’s oldest commissioned warship.
HMS Victory is permanently berthed at Portsmouth Naval Base and an icon of the Royal Navy. Vice Admiral Charles Montgomery, Second Sea Lord and Commander in Chief of HMS Victory said: “….this restoration project will enable future generations to experience for themselves a warship that has an enduring and far reaching effect on national and international history”.
The restoration project will be overseen by BAE Systems who are beginning the 10 year project this month. Project Manager John O’Sullivan said “this phase of restorative work is necessary to guarantee Victory’s long term future and for future generations to enjoy”.
